Industrial Heritage Bus Route – A journey through the industrial heart of the Ruhr region
The Industrial Heritage Bus Route is more than just a city tour; it offers a fascinating journey through time, exploring the industrial heritage of the Ruhr region. Starting either in Essen-Steele or from Essen Central Station, the double-decker open-top bus takes you to legendary sites that have shaped the history of this region.

The journey begins and heads north to Essen, which once defined the face of the Ruhr region with coal, steel and hard work. The route takes you past the Zollverein Coking Plant and Colliery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that symbolises the region’s transformation. The tour continues to Gelsenkirchen, where the Nordsternpark awaits visitors, before heading on to Bottrop.

A particular highlight of the tour is the ascent to the slag heap on Beckstraße with its striking tetrahedron – a unique vantage point offering spectacular views across the entire Ruhr region.

Following this impressive experience, the route takes you via Oberhausen to the Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park. Here, participants can look forward to an interesting guided tour of the site of the former steelworks, which is now an important industrial monument. Of course, there’ll be time for a short stroll to relax and enjoy a snack before heading back to the starting point.

The tour lasts around 4 hours and takes you on a journey full of contrasts: industrial heritage, architecture, history and stunning views are all integral parts of the experience.
